While saving primates is important, keeping one as your own is not advised. Their pet care is quite different than other animals, not only because they are considered an exotic animal, but they can be very difficult to take care of. Primates should be out in the wild with their own kind, not cooped up in cages, used for testing, or kept as pets. Yes, their habitat is decreasing due to the encroachment of man, poaching, as well as many other things.
If you are interested in saving primates, there are many other ways to get involved besides keeping one yourself. There are a number of organizations that are dedicated to the preservation of many species of monkeys, and there are even some places that have established
which you can go to. Some of the most endangered, the orangutans, are kept on an island sanctuary that offers a unique opportunity for Eco tourism. You get to stay in luxurious accommodations, and have many different opportunities to not only observe them in their natural habitat, but also to help conservationists work with the animals themselves. This is not pet care, because they are not kept in cages, or treated like pets.
Saving primates is very important for a number of reasons. They are our closest cousins, and many of our behaviors come from theirs. They are very social animals with close bonds, family ties, and their own rules on behavior within the tribe, just like us. Larger primates, like gorillas, and chimpanzees, bond for life, and have many of the same rituals that we do. Children are constantly cared for until they are adults, and are taught the same values and principles as their parents.
If you just have to try saving primates by keeping one as a pet, then you really need to research their pet care. You have to treat them just like a child, not keep them in a cage. Most monkeys will live as long as you, sometimes even longer, but the difference between a monkey and a child is that the monkey will never grow up and go out on its own; they will be your companion for life. You should also note that they can be aggressive, dominating, and need constant attention. You have to bath them just like a person, every day. You can teach them to go to the bathroom on the toilet just like a human. Depending on the species, you can teach them rudimentary sign language, making it possible to communicate with them on a deeper level.
You can find out how to get involved with saving primates, not only in the wild but from testing facilities, and research centers. There are an abundance of different wildlife organizations on the internet and all of these need your help. With the cost of pet care for primates on a daily basis, you can put this money towards helping these organizations instead of trying to take care of a monkey on your own. This way you are contributing to the cause of helping primates without contributing to the problem. So many animals are already mistreated, or abandoned each year because people don’t really put a lot of thought into taking care of a monkey or other exotic pet.
